I was going to write a post and call it Will Medical Transcriptionists Become Obsolete?. I quickly found out that someone has already written that particular post. The article at MT Mastery Center covers much of the ground that I planned to cover. Given the fact that thousands of late adopters are still using tape pickup and return, I can’t imagine that the entire medical field would jump on the voice recognition bandwagon overnight. Skilled transcriptionists should be able to adapt to gradual changes in the job market and take on more editing and correcting work.

The right person needs to be a stickler for details, must be experienced with heavy workloads, self-motivated, must be able to work by yourself. Radiology background is most important. Typing skills must be at a rapid pace. You accuracy rate must be in the 97% range.

I just read a news item about a new vocational school in India that helps visually impaired students develop skills and find work. At least one student has gone on to find work as a medical transcriptionist. There are plans to create training modules specifically for transcription in the future.

I have never considered transcription as a job that could be accomplished by the visually impaired, by I suppose that it can be done. There are technologies that can assist people with poor eyesight and someone with the proper language skills and typing ability could conceivably make a go of it. Zoomtext is a popular item of software for people with poor eyesight.

On this particular job listing this company is looking for individuals who can cover the weekend shift. The shift hours are 3:00 p.m to 11:00 p.m.

There are various types of dictations to be done, but the bulk of the are ER visits.

You need to have adequate typing skills, be versed in medical terms, and have a good grasp on computer skills. Medical transcription experience in the past would be very helpful. May be able to be set up doing transcription from home.
