If voice recognition software was perfect, there wouldn’t be any need for transcriptionists. The state of the art voice recognition software is effectively used by some transcription services to reduce labor costs. A program has to be ‘trained’ to recognize the speech patterns of a particular person and additionally a speaker who is making a voice recording specifically for use with voice recognition has to learn to speak in a consistent way that is accurately recognized by the software. Even when voice recognition is working at its best, editing and proofreading is necessary.

Some employers have projects that are a mix of text obtained from voice recognition and audio that could not be processed with voice recognition software. A transcriptionist may be given the task of using these sources and creating a finished document.
